Position Overview

The Cybersecurity Specialist plays a key role in strengthening the university’s cybersecurity posture by implementing security controls, responding to incidents, and ensuring compliance with security policies. This role acts as the first line of defense in detecting and mitigating cyber threats, working closely with the Cybersecurity Associate and Team Lead to secure the university’s digital assets. The Specialist is responsible for investigating security incidents and improving security awareness among faculty, staff, and Students.

Key Responsibilities

Threat Detection & Incident Handling

  • Analyze and respond to cybersecurity incidents, including malware infections, phishing attacks, and unauthorized access attempts.
  • Assist in forensic investigations into security breaches and document findings.
  • Assist in refining incident response procedures.

Security Infrastructure & Monitoring

  • Administer and monitor security tools such as firewall, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and endpoint security solutions.
  • Conduct regular vulnerability scans and work with IT teams to remediate identified threats.
  • Assist in maintaining log analysis and SIEM (Security Information & Event Management) operations.

Security Awareness & Training

  • Conduct cybersecurity awareness sessions for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Develop training materials on password management, phishing prevention, and secure online practices.

Collaboration & Documentation

  • Work closely with the Cybersecurity Associate and IT teams to improve security measures.
  • Maintain detailed records of security incidents, findings, and mitigation actions. 
  • Contribute to university-wide cybersecurity projects and initiatives.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity principles, network security, and encryption technologies.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks such as NIST, ISO 27001, and CIS controls.
  • Familiarity with vulnerability assessment tools and endpoint security solutions.
  • Basic scripting knowledge (Python, PowerShell) for automating security tasks.
  • Awareness of cloud security principles (Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Ability to analyze security logs and identify anomalies.
  • Experience with security tools like SIEM, IDS/IPS, and firewalls.
  • Knowledge of penetration testing fundamentals and ethical hacking techniques.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for security incidents.

Qualifications

At least a Bachelor’s (Hons.) in Computer Science or a closely related field from an HEC-recognized university, Information Security course(s).

Experience
  • 2 to 3 years of hands-on experience in cybersecurity, IT security operations, or network security.
  • Experience in incident detection and response, vulnerability management, and security tool administration.
  • Exposure to SIEM, firewalls, IDS/IPS, and endpoint security solutions.
  • Prior experience in conducting security awareness training or collaborating with IT teams on security initiatives.
